Biography
GM Vladimir Epishin was among the 30 best chess players in the world during the 90s, with a peak rating of 2669. He finished third in the 1991 USSR Chess Championship, and he was one of the assistants of Anatoly Karpov during the late stages of his career (from 1987 to 1996). He is also known because there is an opening variation named after him: the Epishin Variation against the Benko Gambit (thought to give white excellent chances of an opening advantage if played with extreme care). In the last few years, Vladimir Epishin has achieved victory in many chess championships, such as the Monarch Assurance PLC International Chess Tournament in the Isle of Man (2002), the “Terre degli Elimi” Chess Festival in Italy (2012), the ChessOrg Festival of Bad Wörishofen in Germany (2013), the Brugsemeesters Open Tournament of Brugge in Belgium (2016) or the HIT Open Nova Gorica in Slovenia (2016).
